Head-to-head matches, placement among many, or individual self-reported numbers. This decides how results are entered.

Pick a result system
Win/loss, win/loss/draw, placement, distance, time, steps or a plain count, with highest-first or lowest-first ranking.

Pick a point system
Decide how much a win, a draw and simply taking part should be worth. Change it between seasons if it needs tuning.
